Throughout the Museum’s second and third floors you will find various exhibits featuring pre-Hispanic Southwest artifacts from our numerous private and academic collections:
- the Mimbres stylistic sequence and changes in decoration over time
- miniature vessels and vessels made by children
- the pre-Hispanic brewing of corn beer
- ceramics at the time of Mimbres population restructuring
- pre-Hispanic and ethno-historic jewelry
- modern Southwest pottery featuring Mata Ortiz and a large collection of Maria Martinez
- bone tools and carvings
- baskets and sandals
On the second floor, you will find the fully restored, original tiered science classroom. Pay attention to the floors during your visit and you might see a burn scar left behind by a chemistry experiment. The fourth floor of Fleming Hall offers various permanent exhibits on building and campus history. Documents, photographs, furniture, clothing, and memorabilia from the founding of New Mexico Normal School in 1893 to the present day are on display.
As new collections are acquired and long-hidden pieces are rediscovered, Museum staff frequently change out objects on display. The Museum staff is also dedicated to providing the most up-to-date scholarly information. No objects known to be from burial contexts are on display.
